Si x,yRx,y \in \mathbf{R}, on dispose lorsque cela a un sens de la formule suivante :
tan(xy)=tanxtany1+tanxtany.\tan(x-y) = \frac{\tan x - \tan y}{1 + \tan x \tan y}.Cette formule ressemble à l’expression de l’énoncé ; il s’agit ici de s’y ramener. À cet effet, on note x1<<x5x_1 < \cdots < x_5 les éléments de EE et yi=Arctanxiy_i = \mathrm{Arctan}\,x_i pour tout i1,5i \in \llbracket 1,5 \rrbracket. Ces derniers sont dans un intervalle ouvert de longueur π\pi, ce qui force l’existence de deux indices iji \neq j tels que 0yiyjπ/40 \leqslant y_i - y_j \leqslant \pi/4. En passant à la tangente :
