Weierstrass approximation theorem

Definition / Real analysis /

English

Let f:[a,b]→Rf : [a,b] \to \mathbb{R} be a continuous function on a closed bounded interval [a,b]⊂R[a,b] \subset \mathbb{R}. Then for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists a polynomial PP such that
sup⁡x∈[a,b]∣f(x)−P(x)∣<ε.\sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x) - P(x)| < \varepsilon.
