Tout d’abord, si EE est vide, alors EE ne peut pas être muni d’une structure de groupe par défaut d’élément neutre.
Considérons EE \neq \varnothing et notons nNn \in \mathbb{N}^{*} le cardinal de EE. Le groupe (Z/nZ,+)(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z},+) étant de même cardinal que EE, on peut trouver une bijection de EE dans Z/nZ\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} que l’on notera φ\varphi.
On considère alors l’application τ:E×EE\tau : E \times E \longrightarrow E définie comme suit :
(x,y)E2,τ(x,y)=φ1(φ(x)+φ(y))  .\forall(x,y) \in E^2, \quad \tau(x,y) = \varphi^{-1} \left( \varphi(x) + \varphi(y)\right) \;.Nous vérifions alors que (E,τ)(E,\tau) est un groupe.
Notons 0\overline{0} l’élément neutre de (Z/nZ,+)(\Z/n\Z,+), et posons
e:=φ1(0)E.e:=\varphi^{-1}(\overline{0})\in E.

Montrons d’abord l’associativité. Soit (x,y,z)E3(x,y,z)\in E^3. Par définition de τ\tau, on a
φ(τ(x,y))=φ(x)+φ(y).\varphi(\tau(x,y))=\varphi(x)+\varphi(y). Donc
φ(τ(τ(x,y),z))=φ(τ(x,y))+φ(z)=(φ(x)+φ(y))+φ(z)=φ(x)+(φ(y)+φ(z))=φ(x)+φ(τ(y,z))=φ(τ(x,τ(y,z))).\begin{aligned} \varphi\bigl(\tau(\tau(x,y),z)\bigr) &=\varphi(\tau(x,y))+\varphi(z)\\ &=(\varphi(x)+\varphi(y))+\varphi(z)\\ &=\varphi(x)+(\varphi(y)+\varphi(z))\\ &=\varphi(x)+\varphi(\tau(y,z))\\ &=\varphi\bigl(\tau(x,\tau(y,z))\bigr). \end{aligned} Comme φ\varphi est injective, il vient
τ(τ(x,y),z)=τ(x,τ(y,z)).\tau(\tau(x,y),z)=\tau(x,\tau(y,z)). Ainsi τ\tau est associative.

Vérifions l’existence d’un élément neutre. Pour tout xEx\in E,
φ(τ(e,x))=φ(e)+φ(x)=0+φ(x)=φ(x),\varphi(\tau(e,x)) = \varphi(e)+\varphi(x) = \overline{0}+\varphi(x) = \varphi(x), donc, par injectivité de φ\varphi,
τ(e,x)=x.\tau(e,x)=x. De même,
φ(τ(x,e))=φ(x)+φ(e)=φ(x)+0=φ(x),\varphi(\tau(x,e)) = \varphi(x)+\varphi(e) = \varphi(x)+\overline{0} = \varphi(x), d’où
τ(x,e)=x.\tau(x,e)=x. Ainsi ee est un élément neutre bilatère pour τ\tau.

Vérifions enfin l’existence d’un inverse pour tout élément. Soit xEx\in E. Dans le groupe (Z/nZ,+)(\Z/n\Z,+), l’élément φ(x)\varphi(x) admet pour inverse additif l’élément φ(x)-\varphi(x). Posons
y:=φ1(φ(x))E.y:=\varphi^{-1}(-\varphi(x))\in E. Alors
φ(τ(x,y))=φ(x)+φ(y)=φ(x)φ(x)=0=φ(e),\varphi(\tau(x,y)) = \varphi(x)+\varphi(y) = \varphi(x)-\varphi(x) = \overline{0} = \varphi(e), donc, par injectivité de φ\varphi,
τ(x,y)=e.\tau(x,y)=e. De même,
φ(τ(y,x))=φ(y)+φ(x)=φ(x)+φ(x)=0=φ(e),\varphi(\tau(y,x)) = \varphi(y)+\varphi(x) = -\varphi(x)+\varphi(x) = \overline{0} = \varphi(e), d’où
τ(y,x)=e.\tau(y,x)=e. Ainsi tout élément de EE admet un inverse bilatère pour τ\tau.

Les trois axiomes sont donc satisfaits ; par conséquent, (E,τ)(E,\tau) est un groupe (et il est même abélien).
