Les solutions sont exactement les fonctions
f(x)=cos(ax)(a0)etf(x)=cosh(ax)(a>0),f(x)=\cos(ax)\quad (a\geqslant 0)\qquad\text{et}\qquad f(x)=\cosh(ax)\quad (a>0),

Étape 1 : La dérivée première est nulle en 0

La formule de Taylor–Young s’écrit
f(x)=1+f(0)x+γ2x2+o(x2),γ:=f(0).f(x)=1+f'(0)\,x+\frac{\gamma}{2}x^{2}+o(x^{2}),\qquad \gamma:=f''(0).D’une part f(2x)=1+2f(0)x+2γx2+o(x2)f(2x)=1+2f'(0)x+2\gamma x^{2}+o(x^{2}) ; d’autre part
2f(x)21=1+4f(0)x+2(f(0)2+γ)x2+o(x2).2f(x)^{2}-1=1+4f'(0)\,x+2\bigl(f'(0)^{2}+\gamma\bigr)x^{2}+o(x^{2}).Ainsi
f(x)=1+γ2x2+o(x2).(1)f(x)=1+\frac{\gamma}{2}x^{2}+o(x^{2}). \qquad \qquad \tag{1}

Étape 2 : Itération de la duplication

Fixons xRx\in\mathbb{R} et posons un=f(x/2n)u_n=f\bigl(x/2^{n}\bigr). L’équation appliquée au point x/2nx/2^{n} donne
un1=2un21.u_{n-1}=2u_n^{2}-1 .Les formules 2cos2θ1=cos2θ2\cos^{2}\theta-1=\cos 2\theta et 2cosh2t1=cosh2t2\cosh^{2}t-1=\cosh 2t se propagent alors le long de la suite, une récurrence immédiate sur jj montre que
un=cosθ  f(x)=u0=cos(2nθ),un=cosht  f(x)=cosh(2nt).(2)u_n=\cos\theta\ \Longrightarrow\ f(x)=u_0=\cos\bigl(2^{n}\theta\bigr),\qquad u_n=\cosh t\ \Longrightarrow\ f(x)=\cosh\bigl(2^{n}t\bigr). \qquad \qquad \tag{2}Ce sont des égalités exactes, valables pour chaque nn où l’écriture est possible.

Étape 3 : Discussion selon le signe de γ\gamma

Fixons x0x\neq 0. Comme x/2n0x/2^{n}\to 0, le développement (1) donne
un1=γx224n+o(4n).(3)u_n-1=\frac{\gamma x^{2}}{2}\cdot 4^{-n}+o\bigl(4^{-n}\bigr). \qquad \qquad \tag{3}

Cas γ<0\gamma<0. Posons a=γa=\sqrt{-\gamma}. Par (3), un<1u_n<1 pour nn assez grand, et un1u_n\to 1 : on peut poser θn=arccosun]0,π[\theta_n=\arccos u_n\in\,]0,\pi[, avec θn0\theta_n\to 0. Alors 1un=2sin2(θn/2)θn2/21-u_n=2\sin^{2}(\theta_n/2)\sim\theta_n^{2}/2, et (3) donne θn2a2x24n\theta_n^{2}\sim a^{2}x^{2}4^{-n}, soit
2nθn n ax.2^{n}\theta_n\ \xrightarrow[n\to\infty]{}\ a|x| .Par (2), f(x)=cos(2nθn)f(x)=\cos(2^{n}\theta_n) pour tout nn assez grand ; la continuité du cosinus donne à la limite
f(x)=cos(ax)=cos(ax).f(x)=\cos\bigl(a|x|\bigr)=\cos(ax).

Cas γ>0\gamma>0. Posons a=γa=\sqrt{\gamma}. Par (3), un>1u_n>1 pour nn assez grand : posons tn=argch(un)>0t_n=\operatorname{argch}(u_n)>0. De coshtn1tn2/2\cosh t_n-1\sim t_n^{2}/2 et (3) on tire 2ntnax2^{n}t_n\to a|x|, puis par (2) :
f(x)=cosh(2ntn) n cosh(ax),doncf(x)=cosh(ax).f(x)=\cosh(2^{n}t_n)\ \xrightarrow[n\to\infty]{}\ \cosh(ax),\qquad\text{donc}\qquad f(x)=\cosh(ax).

Cas γ=0\gamma=0.

\blacksquare
