Par le théorème de Hahn-Banach, si ϕX\phi \in X^{*}, il existe un élément ψ\psi de BXB_{X^{**}} tel que ψ(ϕ)=ϕ\psi(\phi) = \lVert \phi \rVert. Comme XX est réflexif il existe xBXx \in B_{X} tel que ψ\psi est de la forme ϕϕ(x)\phi \mapsto \phi(x). Ainsi, ϕ=ψ(ϕ)=ϕ(x)\lVert \phi \rVert = \psi(\phi) = \phi(x), d’où le résultat.
