Intuition

A scalar is a number by which one can multiply a vectorFR. Most of the time, scalars are simply real or complex numbers.

Formal definition

Let EE be a vector space over a field KK. The elements of KK are called the scalars of EE.
Scalar multiplication is the map
K×EE,(λ,v)λv.K \times E \longrightarrow E, \quad(\lambda, v) \longmapsto \lambda v.

  • More generally, if MM is a module over a ring AA, the elements of AA may also be called scalars.
