Let XX be a non-empty set. Show that the function d ⁣:X×X→Rd\colon X\times X\to \R such that:
∀x,y∈X,d(x,y)={1 if x≠y0 otherwise \forall x,y\in X, d(x, y)= \begin{cases}1 & \text { if } x\neq y \\ 0 & \text { otherwise }\end{cases}is a metric on any set XX. It is called the discrete metric.

Soient x,y,z∈Xx,y,z \in X.
∙\bullet Par définition de dd, on a 0≤d(x,y)0\leq d(x,y), l’inégalité est stricte si x≠yx\neq y, et est une égalité si x=yx=y. Donc dd est deˊfinie positive‾\underline{\text{définie positive}}
∙\bullet Encore par définition de dd, d(x,y)=d(y,x)d(x,y)=d(y,x) (on a soit la tautologie 0=00=0, soit 1=11=1), donc dd est symeˊtrique‾\underline{\text{symétrique}}
∙\bullet Vérifions enfin que dd satisfait l’ineˊgaliteˊ triangulaire‾\underline{\text{l'inégalité triangulaire}}.
(1) Si x=zx=z, alors d(x,z)=0≤d(x,y)+d(y,z)d(x,z)=0\leq d(x,y)+d(y,z) puisque dd est positive
(2) Si x≠zx\neq z et y∈{x;z}y\in\left\lbrace x ; z \right\rbrace, alors d(x,z)=1=d(x,y)+d(y,z)d(x,z)=1=d(x,y)+d(y,z)
(3) Si x≠zx\neq z et y∉{x;z}y\notin\left\lbrace x ; z \right\rbrace, alors d(x,z)=1≤2=d(x,y)+d(y,z)d(x,z)=1\leq 2 =d(x,y)+d(y,z)
Tous les cas sont couverts. CQFD.
Remarque\textit{Remarque} : le cas (3) est simplement "Si x,y,zx,y,z sont deux à deux distincts", mais écrit tel que je l’ai fait on voit mieux (1)-(2)-(3) disjoncte tous les cas (je trouve) !
