Supposons par l’absurde disposer d’un yRy\in\mathbb{R} ayant un nombre fini x1<<xnx_{1}<\dots<x_{n} d’antécédents rangés par ordre croissant. Supposons sans perte de généralité que f(xn+1)>0f(x_{n}+1)>0 (on peut toujours remplacer ff par f-f qui est toujours surjective). On a alors x>xn,f(x)>y\forall x>x_{n},f(x)>y autrement on pourrait appliquer le théorème des valeurs intermédiaire à ff sur l’intervalle [x,xn+1][x,x_{n}+1] qui donnerait l’existence de z>xnz>x_{n} tel que f(z)=y.f(z)=y.
Par ailleurs, ff étant continue sur [0,xn][0,x_{n}], son image par ff est de la forme f([0,xn])=[a,b]f([0,x_{n}])=[a,b]. Ainsi
f(R)=f([0,xn]]xn,+[)[a,b]]y,+[.f(\mathbb{R})=f([0,x_{n}]\cup ]x_{n},+\infty[)\subset [a,b]\cup ]y,+\infty[.Donc f(R)f(\mathbb{R}) est minoré par min(a,y)\min(a,y) ce qui contredit la surjectivité de f.f.
