La constante d’Euler-Mascheroni mesure l’écart asymptotique entre la série harmonique et le logarithme naturel.

Lorsque nn devient grand, la somme
1+12+13+⋯+1n1+\frac12+\frac13+\cdots+\frac1nse comporte comme ln⁡(n)\ln(n), mais reste légèrement plus grande. La différence entre les deux tend vers une constante.

Définition formelle

On appelle constante d’Euler-Mascheroni, et on note γ\gamma, le réel défini par
γ=lim⁡n→+∞(∑k=1n1k−ln⁡(n)).\gamma=\lim_{n\to+\infty}\left(\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1}{k}-\ln(n)\right).
