Intuition

A norm is an object which can measure the "size" or "length" of a vector.

Formal definition

A norm on a vector space EE is a function N:ER+N:E\rightarrow \R^{+} with the following properties, for all vectors x,yEx,y\in E and scalars aRa\in \R:

  1. Separation: If N(x)=0N(x)=0, then x=0x=0.
  2. Scaling: N(ax)=aN(x)N(ax)=|a|N(x).
  3. Triangle inequality: N(x+y)N(x)+N(y)N(x+y)\leq N(x)+N(y).
Remarks
  • Norms are usually denoted
.\|.\|For instance, (x,y)\|(x,y)\| is the norm of vector (x,y)(x,y) in R2\R^{2}.
  • A vector space with a norm is called a normed vector space.

    (4)(\mathbf{4}) Soit (Ei,.i)1in(E_{i},\lVert.\rVert_{i})_{1 \leq i \leq n} une famille finie d’espaces vectoriels normés. Montrer que les applications N1:iEiRN_{1} : \prod_{i}E_{i} \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}, (x1,...,xn)i=1nxi(x_{1},\,...\,,\,x_{n}) \mapsto \sum_{i=1}^{n}\lvert x_{i} \rvert et N:iEiRN_{\infty} : \prod_{i} E_{i} \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}, (x1,...,xn)max1in(xi)(x_{1},\,...\,,\,x_{n}) \mapsto \underset{1 \leq i \leq n}{\mathrm{max}}(\lvert x_{i \rvert}) sont des normes. On dit alors que les produits finis\textbf{produits finis} d’espaces normés sont normés.
    (5)(\mathbf{5}) .:C([0,1])R\lVert. \rVert : \mathcal{C}([0,1]) \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}, f01f(t)2dtf \mapsto \sqrt{\int_{0}^{1}f(t)^{2}dt}.
