A polynomial over a commutative ring AA is a formal expression
P=i=0naiXi=a0+a1X+a2X2++anXnP=\sum_{i=0}^n a_i X^i=a_0+a_1 X+a_2 X^2+\cdots+a_n X^nwhere the aia_{i} belong to AA and an0a_{n}\neq 0. nn is called the degree of PP.

Remarks
  • The set of all polynomials in XX with coefficients in AA is denoted A[X]A[X].
