Par définition, il s’agit de l’application
f∗:π1(X,x0)→π1(Y,f(x0))f_{*}:\pi_{1}(X,x_{0})\rightarrow \pi_{1}(Y,f(x_{0}))définie comme f∗[γ]=[f∘γ]f_{*}[\gamma]=[f\circ \gamma] pour tout lacet γ\gamma basé en x0x_{0}.

Or, comme ff est constante, alors f∘γf\circ \gamma est le lacet constant égal à f(x0)f(x_{0}).

D’où f∗f_{*} est le morphisme trivial, envoyant toute classe d’homotopie [γ][\gamma] sur la classe triviale [cf(x0)][c_{f(x_{0})}].
