Intuition

Une application continue f:X→Yf:X \rightarrow Y transforme tout lacet de XX en un lacet de YY.

De plus, des lacets dans XX restent homotopes après composition par ff. Ainsi, ff agit naturellement sur les classes d’homotopie de lacets, et donc sur le groupe fondamental.

Soient XX et YY deux espaces topologiques, x0∈Xx_{0}\in X, et f:X→Yf:X \rightarrow Y une application continue.

L’application induite par ff sur le groupe fondamental est l’application :
f∗:π1(X,x0)→π1(Y,f(x0))f_{*}:\pi_{1}(X,x_{0})\rightarrow \pi_{1}(Y,f(x_{0}))définie comme f∗([γ])=[f∘γ]f_{*}([\gamma])=[f\circ \gamma] pour tout lacet γ\gamma de XX basé en x0x_{0}.
