Intuition

Une matrice hermitienne est une matrice complexe qui est égale à sa transposée conjuguée. Elle joue, sur C\mathbb C, un rôle analogue à celui des matrices symétriques sur R\mathbb R.

Définition formelle

Une matrice A∈Mn(C)A\in\mathcal M_n(\mathbb C) est dite hermitienne si
A∗=A,A^*=A,où A∗A^* désigne la matrice adjointe de AA, c’est-à-dire la transposée de sa conjuguée.

Autrement dit, si A=(aij)A=(a_{ij}), alors
aij=aji‾a_{ij}=\overline{a_{ji}}pour tous 1⩽i,j⩽n1\leqslant i,j\leqslant n.
