Soit z=x+iyz = x+ iy un nombre complexexx et yy sont des nombres réels.
On appelle yy la partie imaginaire de zz, que l’on note également (z)\Im(z) ou Im(z)\mathrm{Im}(z).

Géométriquement, yy est l'ordonnée du point du plan ayant pour affixe zz.

Remarques
  • La partie imaginaire d’un nombre complexe est un nombre réel contrairement à ce que pourrait faire penser le nom.
Exemples

On représente géométriquement dans un plan le point MM ayant pour coordonnées (3,2)(3,2)
Son affixe est z=3+2iz = 3 + 2i.
La partie imaginaire de zz est 22.
22 est l’ordonnée du point MM.
