Intuition

Un polynôme est scindé sur un corps K\mathbb K lorsque toutes ses racines appartiennent à K\mathbb K.
Par exemple,
X2−1=(X−1)(X+1)X^2-1=(X-1)(X+1)est scindé sur R\mathbb R car ses racines +1+1 et −1-1 sont réelles, tandis que
X2+1X^2+1ne l’est pas, car ses racines ii et −i-i sont complexes.

Définition formelle

Un polynôme P∈K[X]P\in\mathbb K[X] est scindé sur K\mathbb K s’il existe a∈Ka\in\mathbb K et λ1,…,λn∈K\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_n\in\mathbb K tels que
P(X)=a∏i=1n(X−λi).P(X)=a\prod_{i=1}^n (X-\lambda_i).
