Définition formelle
  • Cas réel:
Soit EE un R\mathbb{R}-espace vectoriel et
    φ ⁣:E×E→R\varphi \colon E \times E \to \mathbb{R}une application. On dit que φ\varphi est un produit scalaire sur EE lorsque :
  1. φ\varphi est symétrique, c’est-à-dire
    ∀x,y∈E,φ(x,y)=φ(y,x).\forall x,y \in E,\qquad \varphi(x,y)=\varphi(y,x).
  2. φ\varphi est bilinéaire, c’est-à-dire
    ∀x,x′,y,y′∈E, ∀λ∈R,\forall x,x',y,y'\in E,\ \forall \lambda\in\mathbb{R},φ(λx+x′,y)=λφ(x,y)+φ(x′,y),\varphi(\lambda x+x',y) = \lambda \varphi(x,y)+\varphi(x',y),φ(x,λy+y′)=λφ(x,y)+φ(x,y′).\varphi(x,\lambda y+y') = \lambda \varphi(x,y)+\varphi(x,y').
  3. φ\varphi est définie positive, c’est-à-dire
    ∀x∈E,φ(x,x)⩾0\forall x\in E,\qquad \varphi(x,x)\geqslant 0et
    φ(x,x)=0  ⟺  x=0.\varphi(x,x)=0 \iff x=0.
  • Cas complexe :
Soit EE un C\mathbb{C}-espace vectoriel et
    φ ⁣:E×E→C\varphi \colon E \times E \to \mathbb{C}une application. On dit que φ\varphi est un produit scalaire sur EE lorsque :
  1. φ\varphi est hermitienne, c’est-à-dire
    ∀x,y∈E,φ(x,y)=φ(y,x)‾.\forall x,y \in E,\qquad \varphi(x,y)=\overline{\varphi(y,x)}.
  2. φ\varphi est sesquilinéaire, c’est-à-dire
    ∀x,x′,y,y′∈E, ∀λ∈C,\forall x,x',y,y'\in E,\ \forall \lambda\in\mathbb{C},φ(λx+x′,y)=λφ(x,y)+φ(x′,y),\varphi(\lambda x+x',y) = \lambda \varphi(x,y)+\varphi(x',y),φ(x,λy+y′)=λ‾φ(x,y)+φ(x,y′).\varphi(x,\lambda y+y') = \overline{\lambda}\varphi(x,y)+\varphi(x,y').
  3. φ\varphi est définie positive, c’est-à-dire
    ∀x∈E,φ(x,x)⩾0\forall x\in E,\qquad \varphi(x,x)\geqslant 0et
    φ(x,x)=0  ⟺  x=0.\varphi(x,x)=0 \iff x=0.

Notation : on note souvent un produit scalaire ⟨x,y⟩\langle x,y\rangle, ou ⟨x ∣ y⟩\langle x\,|\,y\rangle, ou encore (x ∣ y)(x\,|\,y).

Remarque

  • Pour montrer les propriétés 1) et 2), il suffit de montrer 1) puis de montrer la linéarité par rapport à la première variable.

Practice this concept with exercises

  • Soit φ\varphi un produit scalaire sur un espace vectoriel EE.
    Montrer que
    f:E→Rx↦φ(x,x)\begin{matrix}f:&E&\rightarrow&\R\\ & x&\mapsto&\sqrt{\varphi(x,x)}\end{matrix}est une norme.
