Si AA est inversible dans Mn(Z)M_n(\mathbb{Z}), alors

1=det⁡(In)=det⁡(AA−1)=det⁡(A)det⁡(A−1).1=\det(I_n)=\det(AA^{-1})=\det(A)\det(A^{-1}).

Or ces deux nombres sont entiers, donc

det⁡(A)∣1,\det(A)\mid 1,

d’où

det⁡(A)∈{−1,+1}.\det(A)\in\{-1,+1\}.

Réciproquement, si det⁡(A)∈−1,+1\det(A)\in{-1,+1}, on a l’identité suivante (car AA est inversible dans Mn(C)M_n(\mathbb{C})) :

A−1=1det⁡(A) t ⁣Com⁡(A).A^{-1}=\frac{1}{\det(A)}\,{}^t\!\operatorname{Com}(A).

A−1∈Mn(Z).A^{-1}\in M_n(\mathbb{Z}).

Ainsi, AA est inversible dans Mn(Z)M_n(\mathbb{Z}).
