Pour R>0,R>0, on note A(R)A(R) l’ensemble { x∈E,d(x,A)≤R }\set{x\in E,d(x,A)\leq R}.

Soient x,y∈A(R),t∈[0,1]x,y\in A(R),t\in [0,1] et a,a′∈A.a,a'\in A. On a alors
d(tx+(1−t)y,A)≤∣∣tx+(1−t)y−(ta+(1−t)a′⏟∈A par convexiteˊ)∣∣≤t∣∣x−a∣∣+(1−t)∣∣y−a′∣∣.d(tx+(1-t)y,A)\leq ||tx+(1-t)y-(\underbrace{ta+(1-t)a'}_{\in A\text{ par convexité}})||\leq t||x-a||+(1-t)||y-a'||.En passant à l’infimum pour a∈Aa\in A puis pour a′∈Aa'\in A on a d(tx+(1−t)y,A)≤td(x,A)+(1−t)d(y,A)≤tR+(1−t)R=R.d(tx+(1-t)y,A)\leq td(x,A)+(1-t)d(y,A)\leq tR+(1-t)R=R. L’ensemble AA est donc convexe.
Soit a∈Aa\in A. On a, d’après l’inégalité triangulaire,
