Soit α\alpha un nombre irrationnel.
On considère f:RRf : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} définie par:
xR,f(x)=cos(x)cos(αx)\forall x \in \mathbb{R}, f(x) = \cos(x) - \cos(\alpha x)xcos(αx)x \mapsto \cos(\alpha x) est périodique de période 2πα\frac{2\pi}{\alpha} et xcos(x)x \mapsto \cos(x) périodique de période 2π2\pi.
Puisque pour tout xRx \in \mathbb{R}, 1cos(x)1-1 \le \cos(x) \le 1 et 1cos(αx)1-1 \le \cos(\alpha x) \le 1, la valeur maximale possible pour la différence cos(x)cos(αx)\cos(x) - \cos(\alpha x) est 1(1)=21 - (-1) = 2.
Montrons que 22 est atteint par ff par un unique antécedent:
