Intuition

Une isotopie décrit une déformation continue d’un plongement dans un autre, de telle façon à ce qu’à chaque étape intermédiaire, on a toujours un plongement.

Définition formelle

Soient XX et YY deux espaces topologiques, et f0,f1 ⁣:XYf_0,f_1\colon X\to Y deux plongements.

Une isotopie entre f0f_0 et f1f_1 est une homotopie
F ⁣:X×[0,1]YF\colon X\times[0,1]\longrightarrow Yentre f0f_0 et f1f_1, telle que, pour tout t[0,1]t\in[0,1], l’application
Ft ⁣:XY,xF(x,t)F_t\colon X\longrightarrow Y,\qquad x\longmapsto F(x,t)est un plongement.
