La trace d’une matrice carrée est la somme de ses éléments diagonaux.

Soient K\mathbb{K} un anneau et A=(aij)1i,jnMn(K)A = (a_{ij})_{1 \le i,j \le n} \in M_{n}(\mathbb{K}) une matrice. La trace tr\text{tr} est une forme linéaire définie par :
tr(A)=i=1naii.\text{tr}(A) = \sum_{i=1}^{n}a_{ii}.Par exemple, on a
tr(123456789)=1+5+9=15.\text{tr}\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3\\ 4 & 5 & 6 \\ 7 & 8 & 9 \end{pmatrix} = 1 + 5 + 9 = 15.

Propriétés

  • La trace est cyclique ; si AA et BB sont deux matrices tel que ABAB existe, alors tr(AB)=tr(BA)\text{tr}(AB) = \text{tr}(BA).
