Soit AMn(R)A\in M_{n}(\mathbb{R}) nilpotente et antisymétrique. On remarque que la matrice A2A^{2} est symétrique car (A2)T=(AT)2=(A)2=A2(A^{2})^{T}=(A^{T})^{2}=(-A)^{2}=A^{2}. Elle est également nilpotente car il existe kNk\in\mathbb{N}^{*} tel que Ak=0A^{k}=0 donc (A2)k=(Ak)2=0.(A^{2})^{k}=(A^{k})^{2}=0. La matrice A2A^{2} étant symétrique réelle, elle est diagonalisable par le théorème spectral. D’autre part, puisqu’elle est nilpotente, son spectre est réduit à {0}\set{0} (car inclus dans l’ensemble des racines du polynôme annulateur XkX^{k}). La matrice A2A^{2} est donc nulle car semblable à la matrice nulle. En munissant Mn(R)M_{n}(\mathbb{R}) de la norme euclidienne induite par le produit scalaire canonique <B,C>=Tr(BTC)\left<B,C\right>=\mathrm{Tr}(B^{T}C) on a A2=Tr(ATA)=Tr(A2)=0||A||^{2}=\mathrm{Tr}(A^{T}A)=-\mathrm{Tr}(A^{2})=0 donc A=0.A=0.
