Dans R\mathbb{R} et Rˉ\bar{\mathbb{R}}, les intervalles ouverts sont les intervalles de la forme :

  • L'ensemble vide : \emptyset
  • Les intervalles ouverts bornés : ]a,b[]a,b[a<ba < b sont des réels
  • Les intervalles minorés non-majorés : ]a,+[]a, +\infty[aRa \in \mathbb{R}
  • Les intervalles majorés non-minorés : ],a[]-\infty, a[aRa \in \mathbb{R}
  • La droite réelle : R=],+[\mathbb{R} = ]-\infty , +\infty[
