Sur une variété, une fonction de transition permet de passer d’un système de coordonnées locales à un autre, lorsque deux cartes locales décrivent une même région d’un espace.

Définition formelle

Soient (U,φ)(U,\varphi) et (V,ψ)(V,\psi) deux cartes locales de dimension nn sur une variété topologique MM, telles que U∩V≠∅U\cap V\neq\varnothing.

La fonction de transition de la première carte vers la seconde est l’application
ψ∘φ−1:φ(U∩V)→ψ(U∩V).\psi\circ\varphi^{-1}:\varphi(U\cap V)\to\psi(U\cap V).

Cette application est un homéomorphisme entre deux ouverts de Rn\R^n.

Practice this concept with exercises

  • On considère le cercle unité S1={(x,y)∈R2∣x2+y2=1}S^{1}=\{(x,y)\in \R^{2}\mid x^{2}+y^{2}=1\}, et deux cartes locales :
    U={(x,y)∈S1∣y>0}avecφ:U→]−1,1[   deˊfini comme φ(x,y)=xU=\{(x,y)\in S^{{1}}\mid y>0\}\quad \text{avec} \quad \varphi:U \to ]-1,1[\:\:\:\text{défini comme } \varphi(x,y)=xV={(x,y)∈S1∣x>0}avecψ:V→]−1,1[   deˊfini comme ψ(x,y)=yV=\{(x,y)\in S^{{1}}\mid x>0\}\quad \text{avec} \quad \psi:V \to ]-1,1[\:\:\:\text{défini comme } \psi(x,y)=y

    1. Déterminer l’intersection de UU et VV.
    2. Déterminer φ(U∩V)\varphi(U\cap V) et ψ(U∩V)\psi(U\cap V).
    3. Déterminer la fonction de transition ψ∘φ−1\psi\circ \varphi^{-1} entre ces deux cartes locales.
